COLLISIONS

Collisions is a series of generative data visualisations driven by the audio spectrum & amplitude of each track.

A unique artwork is generated in Touchdesigner by analysing the whole composition, providing a snapshot in time which visually captures the unfolding rhythms and melodies of each piece.

Each artwork becomes the gateway to a live, data-driven visualisation inspired by the artwork and a key characteristic attributed by the band.

INTRODUCING THE BAND

The band wanted us to explore ways of featuring them in the visuals for Collision IV.
We were tasked with finding a method that would (1) enhance the live shows and (2) enable the exploration to be showcased in an experimental music video.

This was an interesting challenge because of its multifaceted requirements; technically, aesthetically and experientially - combining them for the stage and linear form of storytelling in a music video.

THE APPROACH

The Kinect 2.0 was an obvious choice as a means of data capture and its integration into Touchdesigner due to the particle treatment we had already assigned to Collision IV.

Technically, we were able to read the data captured in Kinect Studio of the band and in Touchdesigner, assign parameters to control rotation, scale, particle dispersion and post-FX. The rotation element gave us a means of retaining a sense of parallax and a three dimensional quality to the capture which we hoped would elevate the music video treatment.

Being able to route everything back through Touchdesigner meant that, aesthetically, the treatment could be aligned to the musically-driven content we had already designed for Collision IV. The approach then became a hybrid of traditional film making, blending the musically-driven content exported from Touchdesigner with moments of the band appearing to transition in and out of the particle world.

WEB 3.0

With the development of Web 3.0 and the user experience becoming richer, there are new opportunities to digitally bring the audience and the band together in ways which were not possible before. To create immersive, online experiences in intimate or imagined spaces, explore real-time solutions and develop the work we have started in this initial phase.
